TELEPHONE: EXECUTIVE 3-6360 December 13, 1962 SUBJECT: Economic Development Libraries in French The first distribution by the world Bank of Ec~nomic Development Libraries in F;;ench is to take place in January 1963, when more than 100 works on economic development will be distributed out of the total of about 350 publications which make up the complete Libraries. The Libraries will contain about 200 works on economic development never before published in French, including many translated into French for the first time. The=e will a.lso be about 30 reference and statistical books and,some 120 works already pu~- • lished in Fr~nch. A comprehensive bibliography has been prepared and can be obtaine<l cu request fi·om the Paris Office of the Bank at 4 Avenue d' Iena, Paris 16e. In all, 210 Libraries are being assembled by the Bank's Economic ~velopment Institute, with the collaboration of a small group of French economists. The Libraries tn"e free of charge to selected institutions in the less developed coun- tries., and are also available at nominal cost to appropriate institutions in the more advanced member countries, e.g., in Western Europe. To date, 55 institutions in the less developed countries have been chosen to receive free Libraries and selection from other applicants is proceeding. Applications can still be enter- tained from institutions in the dev.eloped ,· countries wishing to purchase a Library. Similar Libraries in English were distributed. earlier this year and are housed in central banks, finELnce ministries or planning agencies in the less developed •• countries. The requirement is that each recipient institution should undertake to provide space for the Library, to take care of it, and to make it available to thoae who can benefit from it.
