S. Shahid Husain has been named the new Vice President for Personnel and Administration. Shahid Javed Burki has been named the Bank's new Vice President for the institution's Latin America and Caribbean Regional Office. Husain and Burki take up their new posts on January 16. Before joining the World Bank, Husain held a variety of overnment positions, including Deputy Secretary for Planning and avelopment in Pakistan. In 1963, Husain began his career at the Bank . an Economist in the institution's Economics Department. Later on, he held posts as a Loan Officer for Brazil and as Deputy Director and director of the East Africa Region. Since 1974, Husain has held several Bank vice presidential assignments--of the East African Region, the East Asia Region and of Operations Policy. Since 1987, he has been the Vice President of the Bank's Latin America and Caribbean Region. Burki, who is succeeding Husain as Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, joined the World Bank in 1974 after having worked for the Government of Pakistan and after having worked as a Senior Fellow with Harvard University's Development Advisory Service. Burki began his career at the Bank as a Senior Economist in the institution's Policy Planning Division. Two years later, he was appointed chief of the division. In 1981, Burki became the Senior Economic and Policy Adviser in the office of the Vice President for External Relations. His work included representing the Bank in a variety of United Nations fora and :intaining relations with non-governmental organizations. And in 1983, Burki was promoted to Director of the International elations Department. From 1987 to the present, Burki has served as Director of the Bank's Country Department II, which oversees lending to China and Mongolia.
