February 17, 1962 The world Bank today announced that the 20 senior officials from 18 coun- trtes participating in the current program of' its Economic Development Institute (EDI) will visit Jamaica to study programs of' economic development. The group, . accompanied by Jo~..n H. Adler, Director of the Instit~te, and three staff' members, will arrive in Kingston on Februari'16 and 17 for a atayof' two ~eks. In a program arranged by the Government of Jamaica, the group will meet • with government officials and others to discuss developmental E_lanning and programs in such fields as finance, industry., agriculture., natural resources, health, education and social welfare. They will visit various parts of the island to observe projects at first hand. The Economic Development Institute was organized QY the World Bank in 1955 as a staff college for senior officials of' the less developed countries dealing with problems of economic development. The courses a.re of six months ' duration and a.re designed to provide a comprehensive approach to development problems, treating them from the point of view of' officials who have operating respon- sibilities in theil.• respective government administrations. Field trips are an important part of the program; in previous years, EDI participants h~ve visited Mexico and southern Italy. Jamaica was chosen for this year 's group because of ~- the broad attack being made there on eco~omic development problems. EDI also cooperated with the University College of the West Indies in conducting a special course in Jamaica in the summer of 1959 for government officials in the Caribbean area. r - 2 - George I.
