Newspapers, June 3, 1959 to Tanga.nyilta The World Bank is sending a mission to Tanganyika, at the request of the Governments of the United Kingdom and Tanganyika, to make a general survey of the economy and to assist in the formulation of' a program of' economic development. The mission will begin its work in Tanganyika on June 4 and expects to be there until about the end of August. The mission will appraise the present economic situation and assess • the resources available for future development. It will. ·make tions for the practical measures to be taken to carry out a balanced program of social a...~d economic development, indicating the financial re- recommen.da- quirements of such a program. The mission will consist of nine :members headed by William E. Stevenson, President of Oberlin College, U.S.A. The other me·mbers in- elude economists and advisers on industry and. trade, agriculture, water resources, transportation and mineral resources. This is the eighteenth general survey ·mission to be organized by the Bank. The others have gone to British Guiana, Ceylon, Colombia, Cuba, Guate-ma.la, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Libya, Malaya, Nicaragua, !-Tigeria, /. Trust Territory of Somalila.nd, Surinam, Syria, Thailand and Turkey. With the exception of the reports of the ·missions to Libya and Thailand, ;,hich are being prepared for publication, all the ·mission reports have been published.  • (1 - 2 - The mission members are: William E. Stevenson (United States) Chief' of' Mission Mr. Stevenson has been President of Oberlin College since 1946. A leader in American higher education, he is a trustee of the Institute of International Education and a director of' the Council for Finan- cial Aid to Education. He was a partner in a New York law firm from 1931 to 1946, .and during World War II organized and administered American Red Cross operations in England, North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He has had varied experience in civic and public affairs at a national level, and has ma.de studies in Europe, the Far East and the Middle East. Svend Laursen (United States) Chief Economist Dr. Laursen has been Professor of Economics and Chairman of the Department of Economics of' Brandeis University since 1950. His earlier career included a.n assistant professorship at WilliansCollege, and assignments in various U.S. Government agencies as senior econo- ·mist. From 1950 to 1954 he was a consuJ_tant to the International Monetary Fund; in 1956-57 he was AdYiser to the Government of' Pakistan • on financial ·matters as a lD:etnber of a Harvard University Group, and for a short ti'me in 1958 served as Economic Affairs Officer in the Fiscal and Financial Branch of' the United Nations. Walter A. Chudson (United states) Adviser on Industry and Trade Dr. Chudson has been a ·member of the United Nations Secretariat, Bureau of Economic Affairs since 1946, holding a number of different positions dealing mainly with financial and economic problems of underdeveloped areas of' the world. A Senior Economic Affairs Officer since 1951, he is at present Adviser, International Trade Relations Section. Dr. Chudson has represented the United Nations at annual meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and has been visiting lecturer on international finance at the Bankts Economic Development Institute, as well as at Ya.le University Law School. John Philip Hayes (United Kingdom) Economist Mr. Hayes has been a ·member of the World Bank's Economic Staff since February 1958. Prior to that he was acting head of the Overseas Territories Division of the O.E.E.C., and Research Assistant, Political and Economic Planning, a private· research organization in London. • ( - 3 - • Egbert de Vries (Netherlands) Agricultural Economist Dr. de Vries has been Rector of the Institute of Social studies in The Hague since 1956, and for six years prior to that was Chief of the Agriculture Division of the World Bank. From 1941 to 1946 he was Professor of Agricultural Economics·and Dean of the Agricultural Faculty at the University of Batavia in Indonesia, and subsequently Professor of Tropical Agriculture at the University of Wageningen. He began his career in the service of the Government of the Netherlands East Indies and in later years was special adviser to that Government and. to the Netherlands Governmer.t on economic development projects. Cyril C. Webster (United Kingdom) Adviser on .Agricultural Production Since 1957, nr. Webster has been Professor of Agriculture and Director of Studies at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture, Trinidad. He was Deputy Director of Agriculture in the Government of Malaya in 1956-57, and during 1950-56 was Chief Research Officer, Department of Agriculture, Kenya. Prior to that, he served for 12 years with the Government of Nya.saland. Folkert Hellinga (Netherlands) Adviser on Water Resources • Professor Hellinga has been at the Agricultural University in Wageningen since 19!~7. He served as adviser on water resources on the World Bank's mission to Colo·mbia in 1955 and with the FAO mission to Yugoslavia in 1953. He collaborated~ the preparation of a water policy for the Netherlands, and is a member of the Permanent Committee on Water Laws in the Netherlands and of several other national agricultural engineering societies. · E.R. Hondelink (United Kingdom) Adviser on Transportation Professor Hondelink has been a Consulting Engineer and. Transport Adviser since 1948 and in this capacity has served on several World Bank missions including those to British Guiana, Turkey, Iraq, Malaya and India. From 1945-48, he was Director of the European Central Inland Transportation Organization and from 1942-45 was Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee which planned the re- cons,truction and rehabilitation of conti~ental European transport. George w. Tower (United States) Adviser on Mineral ResO'l.tt:ces Mr. Tower has been a mining consultant since 1955 and has traveled widely in Europe and South America in this capacity. Prior to that he was General Manager of the Hochschitd mining interests in South America. He is a former Director and Vice President of Ventures Ltd.• of Canada and former President and Director of a • number of its subsidiary companies •
