World Bank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A. • Telephone: (202) 393-6360 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 80/103 June 23, 1980 IDA APPROVES $80 MILLION CREDIT TO INDIA FOR WATER AND SEWERAGE PROJECT Rajasthan State in India will implement a water and sewerage project with the assistance of a $80 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA). IDA is the World Bank's affiliate for concessionary lending~ The project will extend piped water supplies to the cities of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Bikaner.as well as about 2,000 villages. Sewerage facilities will also be extended to Jaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner. In order to help the Rajasthan Water Supply and Sewerage Management Board develop its capability in the planning and implementation of programs in the state, additional training will be given to technical and administrative personnel of the Public Health Engineering Department which is the implementa- tion arm of the Board. • The $164 mi 11 ion Rajasthan Water Supply and Sewe·rage project wi 11 enable the urban and rural communities in the project area, involving about fo~r mill ion persons, to have access to piped supplies of safe drinking water. In addition, about 650,000 more persons in the cities Jaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner will be provided with improved and expanded sewerage facilities at the completion of the project. The IDA credit is for 50 years, including 10 years of grace. It carries no interest but wi 11 bear a service charge of 3/4 of 1% rC?.r annum to cover administrative expenses. The Government of Rajasthan wi11 bear the balance amounting to $84 million of the costs. PROCUREMENT: Contracts for equipment and material estimated at about $65 million will be awardid through international com- petitive bidding. Other contracts for materials and equipment with high transportation costs and/or high risk of damage in transit (e.g. concrete) will be awarded on the basis of local competitive bidding. CONSULTANTS: About 900 man-months consultant services of which about 10 are expected to be foreign, would be required for the project.
