F<JR IMMEDIATE RELEASE World Bank ·1 s1 s H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A.• Telephone: (202) 477-1234 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 81/ 13 November 6, 1980 SDR 11.4 MILLION ($15 MILLION) IDA CREDIT FOR GORGOL IRRIGATION PROJECT IN MAURITANIA The International Development Association (IDA}, the World Bank's affiliate for concessionary lending, has approved a credit of SOR 11 .4 million ($15 million) for the Gorgol Irrigation Project in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The $93.2 million project wi 11 form a nucleus of development in the south-eastern part of the country. It comprises the construction of a concrete dam (Foum el Gleita), a conveyance canal, irrigation and drainage networks, service roads, and buildings. The project also includes the provision of technical assistance, extension services, and farm inputs and equipment, and • the creation of 15 villages. Additional financing for the project is expected to be provided by loans from the Abu Dhabi Fund; Saudi Fund; Islamic Development Bank; International Fund for Agricultural Development (!FAD); and Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau (KfW). In addition, grants will be provided by Libya; Fonds Europeen de developpement (FED); and Fonds d 1 Aide et de rooperation (FAC). At full development, the project is expected to produce 26,800 tons of cereals and settle 4,640 families (28,000 people), and provide employment to about 14,000 people. The IDA credit is for 50 years, including 10 years of grace. It carries no interest but bears a service charge of 3/4 of 1% per annum to cover IDA's administrative expenses. NOTE: IDA credits are denominated in SDRs (Special Drawing Rights), which are valued on the basis of a 11 basket 11 of currencies.
