Announcement of IDA Assists Water Supply and Sewerage Project in India on May 3, 1979

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE .World Bank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A.• Telephone: (202) 477-1234 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 79/65 MAY 3, 1979 IDA ASSISTS WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE PROJECT IN INDIA A credit of $48 million, approved by the International Development Association (IDA), an affiliate of the World Bank, wi11 help implement a $100 million water supply and sewerage project designed to benefit over 2 million people living in six towns and 104 villages in India's Maharashtra State. All six towns--Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Ambernath--and 22 of the 104 villages included in the project have piped water, although the supply is inadequate and water is distributed to only part of the • population. Some areas receive water for periods of only two to four hours a day and many areas have insufficient standpipes to meet the needs of the people who cannot afford to have individual water connections. The project includes the augmentation of existing piped water sys- tems in six towns and 22 villages, as well as the provision of new piped water supplies in 82 additional villages. It also provides for sewage col- lection, treatment and disposal in three of the six towns and the expansion and completion of the sewerage system in the remaining three towns and for public standpipes. The project is expected to provide an additional 200 million liters of water per day to more than 2 million people in these towns and villages. Improvement of the water supply and sewerage system will help to reduce the incidence of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases. The IDA credit to India is for 50 years, including 10 years of grace. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project includes the construction of water treatment, transmission and distribution facilities to augment the supply of water to six towns and 22 villages; and to provide new piped water supplies to 82 villages; provision of sewage collection, treatment and disposal in three of the six .ai. towns and the expansion and completion of the sewerage system in the remaining three town'!" provision of public standpipes; improved detection of water distribution losses; repairs of mains and metering; training and technical assistance. It will help strengthen the MWSSB. PROCUREMENT All contracts for equipment, materials and meters will be awarded on the basis of lnternationa1 Competitive Bidding (ICB), with the exception of contracts for sewer pipes, fabrication of steel pipes and items costing less than $50,000 with an aggregate value of not more than $1 mill ion. All civil works for the project, with the exception of Temghar water plant, comprise a large number of small contracts and will be carried out by local contractors.
