FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE •World Bank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A.• Telephone: (202) 477-·1 L34 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 80/23 December 28, 1979 IDA PROVIDES $2.5 MILLION TO TANZANIA FOR DAR ES SALAAM PORT ENGINEERING PROJECT The International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank's soft-loan affiliate, has approved a $2.5 million credit to Tanzania to help finance a port engineering project for Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Harbours Authority will use the funds to draw up detailed engineering designs and prepare and evaluate tenders required for civil works under a proposed harbors project in order to firm up cost estimates. The present project is thus considered to be the first phase of a two-phased approach to finance the improvement and modernization of the Port of Dar es Salaam. The IDA credit wiil help finance a feasibility study on the location of a • bulk grain silo; preliminary and final engineering designs, cost estimates, and tender documents for the bulk grain silo, with ship unloader, conveyor systems, and elevator; and an import storage warehouse. Final engineering designs, cost estimates, and tender documents will also be prepared for deepening and straightening the entrance channel at Dar es Salaam harbor, a container facility, replacement of the petroleum jetty, and a harbor tug berth. The Tanzania Harbours Authority will receive assistance in prequalification of civil works contractors and in the evalua- tion of their tenders. Dar es Salaam is a key link in the Tanzanian transport system as well as in the regional transport system. Traffic has grown steadily at the port in recent years. Improvement in efficiency of the port will relieve congestion and improve throughput, and therefore the port development has high priority. The Tanzania Harbours Authority was created by legislation in July 1977, after the collapse of the East African Harbours Corporation along with the East African Community. Its charge is to establish, administer, and operate a system of harbors to serve the needs of Tanzania and of landlocked neighboring countries. The $2.5 million IDA credit is repayable in 10 years, including two years of grace. It is interest free but will carry a service charge of 3/4 of 1% per year to cover administrative costs. This credit will be refinanced under any subsequent credit or loan the World Bank or IDA may provide to implement the proposed Harbours Project at Dar es Salaam. ~ NOTE: Money figures are expressed in UoS. dollar equivalents.
