RElEASE -World Bank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A. • Telephone: (202) 393-6360 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 79/4 JULY 10, 1978 IDA APPROVES $5.5 MILLION FOR SOMALIA'S PORT The International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank's affiliate for concessional lending to the poorest among the developing countries, has approved a $5.5 million credit for the Somali Democratic Republic's Fourth Port Project. The Somali Government is contributing $1.l million for the project. The $6.6 million project will provide a conventional tanker pier in Mogadishu's deep-water harbor. The pier will be used for receiving inbound crude oil for the Mogadishu oil refinery and for outbound refined products. The project's layout and design will make • provisions for the future handling of bulk grain, sugar and molasses at the pier • The project consists of a tanker pier for crude oil tankers of maximum 50,000 deadweight tons and for smaller tankers for transport- ing petroleum products; pipelines within the port limits; hydraulic model tests, site investigations, detailed engineering, preparation of tender documents, assistance during tendering and supervision of con- struction of the tanker terminal. The $5.5 million IDA credit to the Somali Democratic Republic will be for 50 years, including 10 years of grace. It will carry no interest except for a service charge of 3/4 of 1% per annum for admin- istrative expenses. PROCUREMENT: The contract for the civil works will be awarded on the basis of international competitive bidding in accordance with World Bank guidelines.
