The Department of Environment (DOE) has taken measures to improve air quality management. Eleven Continuous Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAMS) have now been installed in 8 cities in Bangladesh. They have the capacity to monitor major air pollutant (such as PM10, PM2.5, CO, SO2, NOx and O3). In addition, Air Quality Monitoring Reports and Vehicular Emission Monitoring Reports are being produced regularly. A revision of the Vehicular Emission Standards has been prepared and is currently under review. Piloting of new and cleaner technologies in the brick sector is underway. The conversion of an old technology (Fixed Chimney Kiln) into Zig-Zag Kiln is now completed and will be in operation in Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Report No: ISR8104 the next dry season. This conversion will lower emissions of pollutants. The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has been divided into Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) through a Government Gazette order on December 12, 2011. Significant progress has been achieved under the transport component they are overseeing. To ensure safer mobility to pedestrians, the project has constructed Public Disclosure Copy 5 foot over bridges (FOB) and 8 more are under construction. Also, 20 km of sidewalk and road improvement have been completed in Mohammadpur, 14.5 km are on-going in Tejgaon and 21 intersections are being improved The third implementing agency Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) has been focusing on improving public transport planning in Dhaka city. The feasibility study of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for a 20 km corridor from Uttara- Mohakhali - Ramna– Sadar Ghat has been completed. A Bus Restructuring Study is underway and is aimed at improving overall bus route management in Dhaka city. In addition, a partial supervision mission of the Brick component has taken place in September 2012. The team visited the brick industries and discussed the progress of each of the 16 pilots under way. Overall, 9 pilots are on track. For the remaining 7 a detail plan of action has been agreed with the implementing agency to enable a faster implementation. Regarding the split of Dhaka City Corporation, it was agreed that that project will continue to be implemented by the same project implementation unit under the leadership of one project director; but that the project implementation unit will report administratively to both City Corporations depending on the geographical intervention of contracts.
