This project will also contribute toward mitigating negative impacts of reconstruction on the forests of Aceh, mainstreaming of environmental concerns into planning processes, and building sustainable capacity and institutions for forest protection. By helping to ensure that ecosystem services provided by the forest are maintained, the project will support Aceh#s future social and economic development. It has established multi-stakeholder fora that strengthen local ownership, commitment, and capacity for ecosystem protection and management as well as community forest monitoring Public Disclosure Copy teams to detect and report illegal logging, poaching, and encroachment in forest areas. It has also helped create specialized teams and protocols to reduce human/wildlife conflict, develop land use zoning plans. The project has also helped create the foundation for a REDD (Reduced Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) framework as a means to secure sustainable financing for forest protection and local development.
