~world Bank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A. • Telephone: (202) 393-6360 IDA News Release No. 75/71 November 26, 1975 $6 MILLION CREDIT FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN TANZANIA The International Development Association (IDA), an affiliate of the World Bank, is extending a credit of $6 million to help finance a technical assistance project in Tanzania. Since independence, Tanzania has made impressive efforts to expand and develop its high level manpower. But the country's unique connnitment to development has meant that its scarce human resources have been spread very thinly. The shortage of experienced people who can formulate and supervise the implementation of productive proiects, particularlv in some of the highly specialized areas of industry and mining, is critical. The Govern- ment has recognized these problems and has been exploring ways in which to increase the level of technical assistance and to make it more effective . • The ·technical assistance being financed by the IDA credit will help alleviate critical manpower bottlenecks. The project will assist the Government in implementing its program of economic restructuring, and in shifting the emphasis of the country's investment programs from infra- structure to more directly productive projects. The project includes the provision of about 80 man-years of consulting services to prepare pre-investment and feasibility studies for high priority productive investments in the industrial, mining, transport, and communica- tions sectors, and to conduct special studies designed to increase the utili- zation of existing investments; overseas training for Tanzanians in project preparation evaluation, implementation and related techniques; and -the estab- lishment of a project unit and related suoporting services. The project will be implemented by the Tanzanian Investment Bank, P.O. Box 9373, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The IDA credit is for 50 years, including 10 years of grace, and is interest-free with a 3/4 of I% service charge to meet IDA's administrative expenses.
