The capital city's water supply facilities are inadequate to cope with present heavy demand resulting from rapid and unpredictable imrr~gration. u,sses in the system are very high and, because of acute shortages, water is now sup- plied to various sections of the city on a rotating basis. Some newly-built areas are served only by inadequate, temporary arrangements. In addition, turther investment in the sewerage system is necessary to make better use of facilities installed four years ago. • The approximately $11.6 million equivalent project being assisted by IDA is part of a master plan for Amman and is expected to meet the city's water and sewerage requirements until 1982. It is intended to extend piped water supply and sewerage services in Annnan, reduce the system's water losses, help develop the newly-created Amman Municipal Water and Sewerage Authority (AWSA), and improve its capability for managing the water and sewerage systems. The project includes the construction of pumping stations, trtmk mains and a reservoir; general system improvements; and water distribution extensions and replacements. Unplanned.emergency works undertaken because of the 1967 influx of some 100,000 refugees will be rationalized. In addition, new sewer laterals and service connections will make better use of existing sewerage facilities. As part of the project, hydrological equipment to collect storm-water data will be installed and training will be provided for /wJSA staff. The project also includes studies for the development of Aqaba -- covering infrastructure and tourism. The credit is IDA' s second for water supply in Amman. PROJECT DESCRIPT~ON: Construction of new water plDllping station at Tadj; • expansion, replacement of water. distribution network including about 12 miles of large diameter pipes, 50 miles of medium and small diameter pipes; one 4,000 m3 {l million gallonsj service reservoir; improved commtn1ications between key reservoirs and pumping stations; 2 new bore- holes and improvements to existing installations, including pumps, meters, chlorination facilities, pumphouses; retention of specialized firm for leak detection, mapping of leaks and preparation of repair/replacement program; a lo3-mile sewer main; about 62 miles of sewer laterals and house connections; about 5 miles of sewer laterals to complete ongoing program. CONSULTANTS: Preparation of Aqaba region infrastructure and tourism develop- ment to be selected. U.K. Overseas Development Administration is providing advisers for AWSA. Vattenhyggnadsbyran of Stockholm prepared master plan and has been selected for final engineering and supervision of construction.
