Country and Sector Background Turkey is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes. In the 1999 Marmara earthquakes, the death toll reached over 17,000 with a direct economic impact estimated at about US$5 billion, or around 2.5 percent of GNP. Within the nation
