Nanchang City Post Code: 330008 Tel: 0791 6595857 0791 65952823 Fax: 0791 6595857 Assistants: Museum of Ganzhou City  EVALUATION REPORT OF THE CULTURAL RELICS ALONG THE CONGYI-FENGZHOU SECTION UNDER LRIP Chongyi to Fengzhou section starts at the Yangling Boulevard, the Yanjiang Road, Nanqiaotou, Beimen Bridge, Chongyi County. The section under construction leaves the County Capital following the Yanjiang Road, via Guantian, Guting, and Fengzhou and terminates at the border of Hunan Province with a total length of 48.48 km. Commissioned by the Hongtai Expressway Construction Company, Ganzhou City, the Jiangxi Provincial Archaeological Institute conducted an evaluation on local cultural relic resources along the upgrading project. The evaluation consists of cultural relics archive reference and field surveys. Areas investigated include Hengshui, Chongyi County, Ganzhou City; Guantian; Guting; and Fengzhou. A summary of sites of cultural relics near the upgrading project is given below. 1. Fort Tielocheng: Located 6 km west of the Fengzhou township, Fengzhou. A military fort in use during the Zhengde reign, Ming dynasty. The fort is situated on the summit of highly rugged cliffs, with access only through two narrow passage ways. It is about 2 km from the widening project. 2. Tianhongshan Temple: Located 1.5 km north of Mixicun, Hengshui. First built in the Ming dynasty, the surviving structure was rebuilt in the 5th year of the Tongzhi reign (1866), Qing dynasty. The structure is situated on the top of the hill, and consists of three chambers. It is 18 m wide, 9 m long, with wooden beams and structures. Areas covered by the temple is 162 m2. It is 3 km from the widening project. 3. Luohu Pagoda: Located on the Luohu Mountain, 500 m east of Hengshuicun, Hengshui. Built during the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty. A brick structure in hexagon shape, the pagoda has seven level, with a width of 1.9 m, and a height of 12 m. The top two levels of the pagoda collapsed in 1945. It is about 2 km from the widening project. 4. The Qiu family shrine: Located 1 km east of Gutingcun. Guting; built during the Qianlong reign, Qing dynasty. The shrine is a three-chambered structure made of bricks and wood, and is situated on the top of the hill. It is 38 m wide and 22 m deep. It is about 1.5 km from the widening project. The current report confirms that the upgrading project (including earth borrow pits and disposal pits), will not pose any threats to the local sites of cultural relics and that the upgrading project conforms to the requirements of the Cultural Relics Protection Law of P. R. China. The results listed in the current report are, nonetheless, not comprehensive, due to the fact that the current investigation was based on the preliminary design provided by the Hongtai Expressway Construction Company of Ganzhou City, and that the evaluation was  conducted by referring to cultural relics archives and conducting field survey. The Jiangxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology wishes to make the following recommendations: 1. If, for reasons related to technical or geological issues, shift is made to the alignment of the Congyi-Fengzhou section, the Hongtai Expressway Construction Company should immediately inform the Jiangxi Provincial Cultural Relics and Archeology Research Institute in order to revise and adjust the relevant datum in the report. 2. Due to the limited means of cultural relics survey, there is a possibility that there are some cultural relic sites not discovered underground along the alignment. Therefore, if the cultural relic sites are discovered during construction, the Hongtai Expressway Construction Company should immediately cease construction and report to the Jiangxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology. Construction shall resume after proper protective measures are conducted by the Institute.
