CANCER SURVEILLANCE

SURVEILLANCE DU CANCER

Sri Lanka. — In 1975, the Epidemiology Unit of the Department of Health Services commenced a study on malignancies choosing, as a first step, the Cancer Institute at Maharagama. A special cancer notification form was evolved and attached to the clinical notes o f every new case attending the Institute. The completed forms were then sent to the Epidemiology U nit for checking, coding and forwarding to the Census Department for processing and tabulation. During the first quarter 1975,805 new cases attended the hospital; 52% were in males and 48 % in females. One hundred and nine teen cases had female specific malignancies and 16 had male specific malignancies; the balance 670 malignancies were common to both sexes. O f these common malignancies, 60% occurred in males showing a predominance of males to females in the ratio of 3:2. The peak incidence of malignancies occurred in the 50-59 year age group into which 27.3 % of cases fell. The adjoining age groups 40-49 years and 60-69 years claimed the next frequent incidences. Sites of malignancies are as shown below: Cases %

Sri Lanka.

While 53.2 % of cases sought treatment when cancer was restricted to the primary organ, 45.4% had distant or regional metastasis, or extension beyond the primary tumour. Only 1.3% of cases came for treatment when the cancer was in situ.
