Through 2 January, 62 023 cases of smallpox were notified to the World Health Organization for the year 1968. Delayed reports from various countries are expected to raise the final total of cases for the year to about 67 000 cases. This would represent 45 % fewer cases than were recorded during 1967. In Figures 1 and 2 are shown the smallpox rates per 100 000 population by country for 1967 and 1968 respectively. Although data for 1968 are still incomplete, reports received for the concluding months of the year are not expected to alter significantly the desig nated categories of the individual countries. Smallpox was reported by the same number of countries during 1968 as during 1967 but in the majority, incidence rates declined. During 1967,13 countries recorded rates of 5.0 or more per 100000 population, while during 1968 nine countries recorded rates of this magnitude. The status of vaccination activities in each of the 27 countries believed to be endemic or whose status is uncertain is shown in Table 1. 1 N ote from SroaJlpox Eradication Unit.
