INFLUENZA SURVEILLANCE A u s t r ia (22 December 1978). — An increase in the incidence o f influenza-like illness has been observed in Vienna since midDecember. One strain of virus A (H1N1) has been isolated from a patient. F r a n c e (22 December 1978). — 1 Strains of a virus close to A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) have been isolated during the week ending 15 December 1978 in Strasbourg in the east, and Le Havre and La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast. In Toulouse, in the south-west, five isolates of a virus close to A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) were reported in adolescents and young adults, in addition to those obtained in early November. J a m a ic a . — At the end of November and the beginning of December 1978, an increase in the incidence of influenza-like illness was observed in Kingston, in particular in persons less than 25 years old. A strain of virus A identified at the WHO Collaborating Centre on Influenza in Atlanta is close to A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1), contrary to recent H1N1 strains from the United States and Puerto Rico which are closer to A/Brazil/11/78 (H1N1).2 It seems that viruses introduced into Jamaica may have their origins more often in Europe than in the United States. >See No. 50, 1978, p. 367. •See No. 51-52, 1978, p. 370.

F r a n c e (22 décembre 1978). J a m a ïq u e . * Voir N° 50, 1978. p. 367. • Voir N» 51-52, 1978, p. 370.

N e w Z e a l a n d (19 December 1978). — A strain of influenza virus B has been isolated from a nasopharyngeal aspirate at post mortem of a three-month old infant from Dunedin who died after a one week’s illness with vomiting. He became lethargic 24 hours after hospitalization, and his condition deteriorated with convulsions. He had an enlarged liver and a glycemia of 0.6 gr/1. At post-mortem, there was evidence of widespread fatty change in the liver and a swollen oedematous brain consistent with Reye’s syndrome.

N o u v e l l e -Z é l a n d e (19 décembre 1978). T h a ïl a n d e (20 décembre 1978).
