of human salmonellosis reported to the Communicable Diseases (Scotland) Unit, followed by S. enteritidis (47), S. agona (30), S. dublin (16) and S. bredeney (14). Altogether a total of 854 isolations were reported from individual patients or asymptomatic excreters. In comparison 879 salmonella isolations were reported by veterinary laboratories in Scotland; of these, 333 were due to S. dublin and 331 to S. typhimurium, the great majority of which were from bovine sources. The most commonly isolated strains of S. typhimurium reported from bacteriology and veterinary laboratories were phage types U20, U65 and la , each of which showed a close parallel in their occurrence in m a n and in cattle (Table 1).

During the year, four extensive outbreaks of salmonella food poisoning occurred in different parts of the country, viz. in Wig townshire and in Clackmannanshire in the spring, and in Edin burgh and in Penicuik, Midlothian County, in the latter half of the year—all four episodes were caused by S. typhimurium. The first two outbreaks were both due to S. typhimurium phage type U20. The Wigtownshire outbreak was located on a dairy farm and in a nearby village during March and April, and in fected 22 persons as well as cattle. The second outbreak took place in and around three small towns in Clackmannanshire over a five-week period in April and May, when 71 confirmed cases o f infection were identified among over 300 patients with gastro enteritis; during the investigation S. typhimurium type U20 was also isolated from environmental swabs taken from a butcher’s shop and a vending van. The other two outbreaks in Edinburgh and at Penicuik were both caused by S. typhimurium phage type U65. In August and September, an outbreak primarily associated with a Chinese restau rant in Edinburgh affected approximately 130 persons. From the epidemiological evidence showing the predominance of chicken in the food eaten by those dining at this restaurant and from the isolation o f the organism from chickea portions within the kitchen, it appeared that the outbreak was most likely to have been caused by infected poultry. However, the simultaneous isolation of S. typhimurium type U65 from the surface of imported raw beef in the same kitchen and the evidence of actively occurring infection among cattle, followed by subsequent events in Midlothian County, suggested an alternative hypothesis that the infection was primarily o f bovine origin. The fourth outbreak, which occurred in Penicuik, Midlothian County, started during the latter weeks of 1972 and continued into the New Year. A total of 273 persons associated with this town were found to be infected following the drinking of nonpasteurized milk, which had been supplied from a farm in Pee blesshire.

The third strain of S. typhimurium which was particularly active in man and in cattle during the latter half of the year was phage type la. Bovine infection occurred primarily in the East of Scot land, although human cases were reported mainly from Glasgow and central Scotland. O f the other serotypes isolated during 1972, only S. agona caused infection to any extent. Most of the 30 isolations reported were made between July and October from patients in several different areas of Scotland, several of whom acquired their infection during visits to the continent. Two asymptomatic excreters of the or ganism were Italian children aboard a visiting ship in Glasgow, discovered in the course o f contact screening of a case o f para typhoid fever. Altogether 30 persons were reported during the year to have acquired their salmonella infection while overseas and particularly while in Mediterranean lands.
