The progra.r. *;i; "-oniiru" r""ti"g t;r a candidate, preferably a francophone African JF AF.RO MIILTIDISEASE AFRICA SUR\'EILI-ANCE AND CONTROL CENTRE FOR WEST 7 - The Committee was informed about the outcome of the recent follow-up meeting which reviewed the implementation of the recommendations of the 1998 meeting of Directorsof Health Services and of NationalEpidemiological Surveillance Units. At the follow-up meeting it was recommended that each of the Participating Countries would prepare a five-year plan for the esiablishment/strengthening of its multidisease surveillance service considering also the development of Iaboratory networking 8 In the meantime an OCP consultant, Fred Wurapa, had made recommendations for the establishment ofthe Centre, including preparing draft post descriptions for the staff to be appointed by AFRO. The AFRO Director of Disease C_ortrol, Dr Kabore, participated in the follow-up *..tirg au.ing which the communications between OCP and AFRO were strengthened to ensure that the technical competence in the Regional Office was closely involved in the development of the Centre. The TOR/mandate of the Centre were now being redefined to justifr its placement in Ouagadougou as a "Centre of Exellence" with modification also of its objective. A plan of Operationi cov#ng thetransition period mid-1999 to 2002 supported by OCP and the years ZOo; - 200g (growttr-and consolidation) was under preparation. This Plan would also be used to aitract Donor support. The OCp budget would include an arnount ofUS$ t0O 000 annually for the years I ggg,2OOO und ZOOt, while theAFRO commitments had not yet been spelled out in detail. 9. Gven the commitment to report to the September 99 session of the WHO Regional Committee forAfrica, CSA requested the oCP Management to contact AFRO in the n.u, futrr" with a view topreparing a joint paper for that session setting out the plans and respective commitments and requirements. The Bank would invite Dr Samba to attend the Donors' Conference and hoped also thatDr Kabore would attend to inform the Donors about the progress made including decisions concerning the budgetary commitments of AFRO and OCp. G. TWENTY-FIFTE ANNTYERSARY OF OCP 10. CSA heard summaries of the proceedings of the symposium on "The Contribution ofOnchocerciasis Control to Health and Socioe"ono-i. Development" held during the World Health{ssembly in May 1999. An account was also given of the plans and preparations for the unveiling of the oncho statue on the wHO HQ grounds and for the round table on "partnership for Health-, to be orgaruzed in conjunction with that event. H. PREPARATIONS FOR JPC2O 11.
