CHANCROID OUTBREAK C anada. — Sixteen cases o f chancroid were reported during December 1975 in Manitoba. Five additional cases were also reported in January 1976. This is a venereal disease which is fairly common in the tropics but is quite rare in temperate climates and which has not been reported in Manitoba for many years. It is believed that the initial case could have come from a western province where it may have been introduced from the Caribbean area. The disease is character ized by a localized self-limiting ulcerated area usually on or near the genitals which is quite painful and gives rise to swelling and abscess formation in the neighbouring lymph glands. Chancroid is caused by a bacillus, Haemophilus ducreyi, which is quite difficult to culture. It has an incubation period o f three to five days and responds well to sulfa drugs and tetracycline. Prevention is based on the early location and treatment of sexual contacts.

To date laboratory confirmation has not been obtained for any of the cases in Manitoba and the diagnosis has been based solely on clinical grounds. All the reported cases came from one area o f a large town and sexual contact from one to another could be traced. Intensive case finding and contact investigation are continuing in order to eradicate this disease again from the province.
