SURVEILLANCE OF VIRAL HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER — Further to the review of the management ofviral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) suspects over the two-year period 1976-1977, 1 information is available on 34 patients admitted to Coppetts Wood Hospital in 1978 for investigation o f febrile illness after visiting Africa. Nineteen had been referred because VHF had been suspected; all save one were Lassa fever suspects. The place­ ment of all patients was substantially in accordance with our pre­ viously adopted policy (Table 1). U n it e d K in g d o m .

SURVEILLANCE DE LA FIÈVRE HÉMORRAGIQUE VIRALE R o y a u m e - U n i . — En complément de l’étude des cas suspects de fièvre hémorragique virale observés sur deux ans pendant la période 1976-1977,1 on dispose maintenant de renseignements sur 34 malades admis au Coppetts Wood Hospital en 1978 pour observation d ’attein­ tes fébriles après un séjour en Afrique. Dix-neuf de ces malades avaient été mis en observation parce que l’on soupçonnait une fièvre hémorragique d’origine virale; sauf pour l’un d ’entre eux, il s’agissait de cas suspects de fièvre de Lassa. Tous ces malades ont été placés sous surveillance conformément à la politique précédemment adoptée (Tableau 1).

Thirteen suspects and one contact originated from Nigeria, four from other parts of West Africa and one from Southern Rhodesia. Nine suspects had been in rural areas; the other ten suspects had not been in country districts but other factors dictated a more cautious 1See No. 47, 1978, p. 340.
