DEPENDENCE LIABILITY OF " NON-NARCOTIC " DRUGS 47 QUINAZOLINONES Of the two compounds listed (Table VIII), methaqualone (S 120) has been marketed for the longest time. In Japan, many young persons abused methaqualone as long as that drug was available without prescription. The Japanese have also de- scribed convulsions and delirium following with- drawal of methaqualone, indicating that it produces dependence of the barbiturate-alcohol type. Only one report of dependence on methaqualone was found in the western literature.Y0 Some evidence of abuse of a preparation (Mandrax) containing methaqualone and an antihistamine has been reported in British 197-199 and German203 journals. Accordingly, methaqualone, pending the availability of more definitive information, must be regarded as having low to moderate potential for abuse. By chemical and pharmacological analogy, the abuse iability of mecloqualone (S 119) must be rated as equal to that of methaqualone. REFERENCES 197. De Alarcon, R. (1969) Brit. med.
