SELECTION OF TOPIC FOR THE TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS DURING THE ::>:rJrrEENTH SE:>SION OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE
The Executive Board at its eighth session adopted. a resolution inviting the regional committees to consider the advisability of holding technical discussions on matte s of regional interest. l This suggestion 2 was supported by the Committee and since 1952 technical discussions have taken place at each session. The distribution of technical discussions in the Western Pacific Region in accordance 'Nith subject and year is given in Annex 1. The Committee may 'Nish to consider, among others, the following topics suggested by the Secretariat. 1.
THE USE OF HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICES m NATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES
There is growing interest in improving the effectiveness of health educa;\;ion in health projects, with more and more countries in the Region beginning to plan and develop services for this purpose. It is therefore timely and appropriate that technical discussions be held. which focus on (a) the effective utilization of these services in health programmes and activities requiring the understanding, co-operation and support of the public; (b) the organization of health education services in national and provincial health administrations; and (c) the developmmt of qualified health education leadership, including selection and. training. 2. EVAWATION OF FELLOWSHIP PROGBAMMES FOR THE TRAINING OF MEDICAL AND HEALTH PERSONNEL

WPjRCl5/ll page 2 health, with ~he aid of fellowships provided by governmental, voluntary, bi~ateral or 1nternational agencies. With the new ideas and experience ga.:tned abroad, the returned fellws are in a position to take up specific assignments or to assume greater responsibility than before the fellowship study. It is proposed to review, discuss and evaluate the effectiveness of national fellowship programmes, with special reference to the selection of suitable candidates, the placement of fellows for overseas study and the utilization of the services of the returned fellows, in order to find the most appropriate way of implementing such programmes and ensuring that their objectives are fully achieved .

APPLIED NUTRITION

THE: PUBLIC HEALTH PROGIWIME
The older concepts of academi! nutrition research and study are being replaced with the newer ideas of applied nutrition, which seeks to improve the economic, physical and mental well-being of people at the village level. There is, however, little past .experience which can be utilized as a guide for governments wishing to undertake nutrition activities. Despite a growing anxiety about the nutritional status of populations and a desire to improve conditions, governments are naturally reluctant to embark on activities which, to their mind, would incur heavy expenditure and the deviation of field staff who are in short supply. It is not generally realized that much can be achieved by the integration of nutrit ion services in other public health activities, in particular, maternal and child health, nursing and health education programmes. It would be useful to study and discuss: (a) how best this could be achieved; (b) the cost to the governments in terms of money and staff; and how these activities might be co-ordinated and integrated with applied nutrition.
