\fl>R/RC38. R16 TRADITIOHAL MEDICIHE The Regional Committee, Having considered the report of the Regional Director;1 Recalling resolutions vlPR/RC36. R6; \VIIA30.49, \IJHA31 .33, ~lliA40 .33 and Recognizing that traditional medicine, herbal medicine and acupuncture in particular, may bo of value for utilization in the health services; Commending the work done on the standardization of acupuncture nomenclature; 1. URGES Hember States: (1) to establish or further develop programmes on traditional medicine in the light of their specific . needs and circumstancesj (2) to undertake research in regard to traditional medicine, particularly in the followine areas: (a) inventory surveys of medicinal plants; (b) the quality control of traditional drugs; (c) evaluation of the safety and efficacy of traditional medicine, based on the concepts of both modorn and traditional medicine (d) the cost-effectiveness of traditional medicine; (3) to strengthen training in traditional medicine for different categories of health personnel; (4) to share experience and information traditional medicine freely with one another; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director: in regard to (1) to cooperate with Member States in the formulation and implementation of traditional medicin~ programmes; (2) to undertake work in relation to standardization of the terminology used in herbal medicine; (3) to support information exchange on traditional medicine among Member States through a network of collaborating centres and participating institutes as well as through publications and scientific meetings.
