SETTING-UP OF AN INFLUENZA SURVEILLANCE NETWORK F r a n c e . — From November 1975 to June 1976 and from Novem ber 1976 to April 1977, an influenza surveillance network was set up by the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM). This network is based on the monitoring of absences from school among children aged nine to 12 years m a num ber of large cities located in most regions of the country. When the threshold of 15 % absenteeism is reached, an investigation is set in motion in which the absent schoolchildren and their families are visited at home for routine testing for influenza viruses. Pre liminary typing o f strains is carried out in the regional laboratories, and precise typing is performed by the national influenza centres in Paris and Lyon. In 1976-1977 the network covered 21 towns, as against 12 in 19751976 (267 classes and 6 858 children monitored in 1976-1977 com pared with 198 classes and 4 773 children the previous winter). From November 1976 to April 1977 the number of samples taken (163, 32 of which proved positive for the influenza virus) fell by comparison with the corresponding period a year earlier (242, including 43 positive); this reflects the lesser severity of the influenza outbreak last winter. In Novembet 1977 this network is to be extended to towns with fewer than 30 000 inhabitants. In these towns the immunity status of the population may be different and it may be possible to isolate some strains more easily than in the large cities. The aim, after an approach concentrating on the detection of epidemic outbreaks, is to make further improvements in the facilities for early identifica tion o f viruses.

CONSTITUTION D’UN RÉSEAU DE SURVEILLANCE DE LA GRIPPE F rance .
