The report highlights features of leishmaniasis as a major neglected tropical disease that are important in terms of control. It submits for the Board’s consideration a draft resolution outlining recommendations to improve the knowledge of epidemiological impact of leishmaniasis and measures for its control. 5.2 Thalassaemia and other haemoglobinopathies
Item proposed by a Member State. The report provides information on the impact of thalassaemia on morbidity and mortality. It lays out strategies and recommendations for surveillance, prevention and management, and the potential of comprehensive approaches to reduce inequalities in treatment globally. 5.3 Rational use of medicines: progress in implementing the WHO medicines strategy
Item proposed by a Member State and deferred from the 117th session of the Executive Board. With reference to resolution WHA58.27, data are submitted demonstrating irrational use of medicines worldwide and lack of implementation of policies known to promote appropriate use of medicines. A draft resolution encouraging implementation of national policies to promote rational use of medicines is submitted for the Board’s consideration. 5.4 Arsenic mitigation for safe ground water
Item proposed by a Member State. The report describes developments in the recognition of arsenic in drinking-water as a significant health concern, its health and socio-economic impacts and approaches to mitigation. It reviews responses, including relevant actions undertaken by WHO.

The report highlights the strengthening of health systems through essential health technologies, and the value of these technologies in helping to achieve the healthrelated Millennium Development Goals. Health information systems in support of the Millennium Development Goals
Item proposed by a Member State. The report describes ways in which WHO and its partners are providing support for country-led initiatives to strengthen health information systems, to increase the availability, quality and use of data for evidence-based decision-making, and to improve reporting of progress towards health goals, including the Millennium Development Goals. 8.4 eHealth: standardized terminology
Item proposed by a Member State. The document emphasizes the emergence of standardized terminolologies as a significant component of health information systems, which contribute to supporting interoperability of systems across medical domains, finding technological solutions, and crossing geographical and cultural boundaries. 9.
