2014 Issue No. 12 - Week 23 (as of 9 Jun 2014) HIGHLIGHTS Polio Update in Lao PDR Lao People’s Democratic Republic was classified as a “tier 2” risk country due to persistent polio immunity gaps which leave the country vulnerable to poliovirus importations. At the 22nd EPI TAG Meeting, all tier 2 countries were requested to complete a draft polio endgame plan completed by mid-2014. Lao PDR is the first tier 2 country in the Region to comply with this request. To ensure high-level support for the implementation of the polio endgame in Lao PDR, in March 2014, an advocacy event was conducted. Representatives from the Lao PDR National Immunization Program, WPRO, and other partner organizations met with the Vice Minister of Health to brief her on the activities called for by the Polio Endgame. Following the meeting, a timeline with key activities pertaining to the polio endgame was proposed by the National Immunization Program and was validated by the Vice Minister. Following this meeting, in April 2014, Lao PDR submitted its application to the GAVI to support the introduction of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) in October 2015. Additionally, in early June, the National Immunization Program (NIP) and National Center for Laboratory and Epidemiology (NCLE),with support from partners, developed a comprehensive Polio Endgame Plan for Lao PDR for 2014-2018. This plan outlines the key areas of emphasis and actions to be taken relevant to the polio program including: (1) surveillance, (2) boosting population immunity, introducing IPV, and switching from tOPV to bOPV, (3) containment and certification, and (4) the polio legacy. Special congratulations to the NIP and NCLE for their hard work to ensure the timely initiation of the Polio Endgame and continued efforts to protect the children of Lao PDR by keeping polio-free.
