POST-SMALLPOX ERADICATION SURVEILLANCE Discontinuation of Smallpox Vaccination In almost all of WHO Member States and Associated Members, obligatory smallpox vaccination has been discontinued but vaccina tion sometimes takes place at the request of individuals or travel agents. In order to call a halt to such practice, the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices of the United States o f America, meeting in April 1983, agreed that no smallpox vaccine would be made available by man ufacturers to anyone other than a laboratory director requiring it for vaccination of staff working with orthopoxviruses. This decision could serve as an example to health authorities who are considering ways to control unnecessary vaccination in other countries where smallpox vaccine is still being produced and distri buted for unjustified vaccinations.
SURVEILLANCE POST-ÉRADICATION DE LA VARIOLE Abandon de la vaccination antivariolique Bien que l’obhgauon de la vaccination antivariolique ait été levée dans la quasi-totalité des Etats Membres et Membres associés de l’OMS, on continue à pratiquer la vaccination de temps à autre à la demande de particuliers ou d’agences de voyage. Pour mettre un terme à cet état de fait, le Comité consultatifpour les pratiques vaccinales des Etats-Unis d’Amérique, lors de sa réunion tenue en avril 1983, a décidé de prescrire aux fabricants de ne plus délivrer de vaccin antivariolique qu’aux seuls directeurs de labora toire qui en auraient besoin pour la vaccination du personnel mani pulant des orthopoxvirus. Cette décision pourrait inspirer les autorités sanitaires d’autres pays où du vaccin antivariolique continue à être produit et distribué pour des vaccinations qui ne se justifient pas.
