NATIONAL ONCHOCERCIASIS COMMITTEES Fifteenth meeting Ouaeadousou. 28-30 Mav l99l Ministry of Health and Social Welfare National Onchocerciasis Evaluation and Treatment Team : COTE D'IVOIRE Devolution activities I - Gains (a) Existence of a national evaluation and treatment team (27 July 1990) ; (b) Acquisition of adnirinistrative premises at Bouake (March l99l) for the national team; (c) Gift of four Land Rovers (including two for use as motor vehicles and two as spare parts) from WHO /OCP to Ministry of Public Health, as part of devolution in December 1990. II - Activities (A) Alreadv undertakJn I - In the forest area With IPR/Bouake, the national team carried out a simple evaluation and mass treatment mission from 5 to l8 November I990 in the Danane area. Out of an enumerated population of 2,938 persons, 1,849 were treated and skin snips taken from2,269. 2 - OCP treatment area We would like to recall that from September 1989 to 2 April l99l these were: - six simple evaluation missions; . - two mass treatment campaigns at Touba (Upper Sassandra). To sum up, in 20 months of collaboration with OCP, the national team has visited 120 villages: - enumerated 34,439 persons - taken skin snips from 15,444 persons - treated 8,215 persons with ivermectin NOCl5.3 ORIGINAL: FRENCH ,l 2 B - Planned activities (l) A simple verification evaluation of the five villages already treated in November 1990 with IPR/Bouake is planned for the first week of May 199 I , and a mass treatment m[]sion for November 1991. (2) A mass treatment mission complemented by the training of the Chief medical officerr$ and one of their leprosy specialist nurses from l4 forest-area rural health sectors concqrned with onchocerciasis. This mission is to take place in the Adzope area in August-Sept0$rber 1991. (3) A similar seminar concerning the 12 rural health sectors in the OCP area will be tulld at Bouake in November 1991. The reorganization and revitalization of the National Onchocerciasis Committee will'take effect as from the Ouagadougou meeting. This Committee will be charged with: - the preparation and putting in place of the whole devolution policy; - the management of the activities and devolution-genorated achievements. Its technical structure will be the national evaluation and treatment team based in Bou0ke. It will have the following organizational structure: - President - Vice-President - Secretary Minister of Health Director of Community Health Medical Officer-Coordinator of National team based in Bouaki I IMembers - One officer - One officer - One officer from Ministry of Economic Planning and Finance from Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources from Ministry of Communications. '5) The NOC will have: in the short:term, to reflect.bn the pro$ramme of a na{ional onchocerciasis day similar to the World Leprosy Day, and finally in the medium term, look for tfeans of financing for the real putting in place of the devolution plan. li
