MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS U ntied K in g d o m . — Some increase m the number of cases of menigococcal meningitis reported by laboratories in recent years has previously been n oted1 Unfortunately no straightforward analysis of the trend m numbers of notified cases in recent years can be made since all forms o f acute meningitis have been recorded under one heading for the past three years A sharp increase in the number of cases notified m the last three years has also been reported from Belgium2 The number of cases of meningococcal meningitis reported by laboratories m the United Kingdom so far this year has been similar to the corresponding period last year

There is no evidence of mcreased numbers of epidemic group A strains, but a proportion of strains of Neisseria meningitidis m u tant to sulphonamides has been reported O f 117 strains recently isolated from clinical cases 10 (9 %) belonged to group A, 70 (60%) to group B, 34 (29 %) to group C and 3 to other groups In 15 (6 %) of 241 strains, all from clinical cases, the M I C. of sodium sulphadiazme after two days incubation was 0 64 mgm % o r greater, in I of these it was 5 0 mgm % or more, and in 4 of them it was 100 mgm % These levels of resistance indicate that sulpho namides alone can no longer be rehed on in the treatment of menin gococcal infection. Accounts o f five cases of fatal meningococcal infection have been received which serve as reminders o f how rapidly fatal this infection may be •SeeN o 20,p 201 •SeeNo 25,p 24S
