Health technologies Report by the Secretariat
1. Pursuant to the Director-General’s commitment to the Executive Board at its 120th session,1 a group of experts was convened for a consultative meeting on health technologies (Geneva, 26–28 March 2007) in order to examine two areas of concern to Board members, namely, the scope of health technologies and the drawing up of a list of health technologies. 2. The group’s main recommendations were that the Secretariat should prepare interrelated information sets on those health technologies that are indispensable, at different levels of care and in various settings and environments, in dealing with groups of diseases, conditions and disabilities that are accorded a high public health priority. Sufficient supplementary information should be provided in order to guide Member States requesting assistance in determining what is locally feasible and appropriate. In this context, the Secretariat should develop methodological tools to support Member States in their analyses of health-technology needs and health-system prerequisites at country level. 3. A report outlining the discussions and recommendations of the group of experts is being submitted to the Executive Board for consideration at its 121st session following the present Health Assembly.2
