ANIMAL RABIES T he N etherlands. — Although wildlife rabies has been present in the Federal Republic of Germany for many years and was shown to be close to the border with the Netherlands in 1954, it was not until August of 1974 that the disease was diagnosed for the first time in a fox in Sellingen, Province of Groningen. A second rabied fox was found in the same town in February 1975. Since that time the disease has been detected quite frequently in foxes in the Pro vinces of Groningen and Overijssel near the frontier of the Federal Republic o f Germany. There was an isolated infection of a fox in Smilde, Province of Dienthe, which is quite a distance from the border. Up to 1 De cember 1975 rabies had been diagnosed in 17 foxes but had not, until that time, been observed in other animals. Vaccination o f the dog population in the areas where rabies occurs has been strongly re commended. The only record o f human involvement has been a human bitten by a rabied fox on 18 November 1975, who was treated with inactivated baby rabbit brain rabies vaccine and human antirabies immunoglobulin within 24 hours of exposure.

RAGE ANIMALE

P ays-B as.
