INFLUENZA SURVEILLANCE C h il e . — 1A serological survey is carried out each year in MarchApril, before the influenza season starts, in the same area o f Santiago in order to ascertain the prevalence of influenza antibodies in differ ent age groups of the population. This survey makes it possible for the comparison o f the influenza situation with that of the previous year. It also constitutes a basis for the eventual evaluation of the incidence in the season which will soon begin. In 1978, a survey including about 120 sera obtained from young people from 2-19 years of age showed no haemagglutinationinhibition (HI) antibodies at a 1/10 dilution against antigens A/USSR/77 (H1N1) and A/FM/47 (H1N1). The survey of 1979 has shown a high prevalence of HI antibodies at a dilution > 1/10 in young people from 2-19 years: — with antigen A/USSR/77 (H1N1) this prevalence was 43 % in the age group 15-19 years (30 sera), 70% in the age group 10-14 years (30 sera), 29 % in the age group 6-9 years (28 sera) and 19 % in the age group 2-5 years (32 sera);

SURVEILLANCE DE LA GRIPPE C h i l i .

— with antigen A/Valparaiso/78 (H1N1), similar to A/Brazil/11/78 (H1N1), the prevalence was 80% in the age group 15-19 years (30 sera), 83 % in the age group 10-14 years (30 sera), 50% in the age group 6-9 years (28 sera) and 25 % in the age group 2-5 years (32 sera). These findings show that infections with virus A (H1N1) were very widespread in young people during the 1978 influenza season. 1 See No. 4, p. 28.
