AGENDAS OF THE ONE-HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTEENTH SESSION OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD, THE FIFTY-NINTH WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY AND THE FIFTY-SIXTH SESSION OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE Report of the Regional Director EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. By Resolution AFR/RC30/R6, the thirtieth session of the Regional Committee approved the procedure of coordinating the agendas of the Governing Bodies of WHO at global and regional levels. 2. Pursuant to Article 50 of the Constitution, operative paragraph 4(3) of Resolution WHA33.17, and Recommendation 16 of the Executive Board Working Group, the Regional Committee is invited to consider the provisional agenda of its fifty-sixth session and decide on issues that should be recommended to the one-hundred-and-seventeenth session of the Executive Board and the Fifty-ninth World Health Assembly.

INTRODUCTION 1. The World Health Assembly, in its Resolution WHA33.17, determined that WHO’s directing, coordinating and technical cooperation functions are mutually supportive and decided that the work of the Organization at all levels should be interrelated. Thus, the Provisional Agenda of the Regional Committee is drawn up so as to harmonize it, to the extent possible, with those of the Executive Board and the World Health Assembly. This will enhance the contribution of the African Region to the work of the Governing Bodies. 2. The following table shows the correlation between the agendas of the one-hundred-andseventeenth session of the Executive Board (January 2006), the Fifty-ninth World Health Assembly (May 2006), and the fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth sessions of the Regional Committee. The Committee may wish to identify issues of regional and global interest that could be recommended to the Executive Board. In accordance with the Rules of Procedures of the Executive Board, the provisional agenda of each session of the Board shall be drawn up by the Director-General in consultation with the Board’s chairman. It shall be dispatched with the notice of convocation six (6) weeks before the commencement of a session. 4. The attached indicative list of items for the one-hundred-and-seventeenth session of the Executive Board will be subject to further consultations between the Director-General and the Chairman. It includes items requested by the Health Assembly or the Board at a previous session, items proposed by members of the Board and items proposed by the Director-General. It is submitted to the Regional Committee for information. 5. In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Health Assembly, the Executive Board shall prepare the provisional agenda of each regular session of the Health Assembly after consideration of proposals submitted by the Director-General. 6. The attached draft agenda for the fifty-sixth session of the Regional Committee has been drawn up by the Regional Director and is submitted for discussion and approval by the Regional Committee.
