ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) F r a n c e (1 January 1984). — Since March 1982, 107 cases of AIDS have been recorded in France. The investigation covers only cases which meet the criteria for case definition drawn up by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, United States o f America.1 Sixty-three cases were recorded in 1983. The rate o f notifications remained stable during the year, with 1 or 2 new cases per week. Ninety per cent of the cases were reported from the Pans region. Isolated cases were reported from Marseilles, Bordeaux, Montpel lier, Nantes, Tours, Saint-Etienne, Dijon, Besançon, Toulouse and Brest. The characteristics found in the patients recorded in France are similar to those observed in the other countnes affected by AIDS (distribution of diagnosis and case-fatality, sex, age, patients’ belonging to known high-nsk groups) (see Tables I to 3).

The uneven geographical distribution o f the cases, which occur predominantly in the Pans region, might be associated with inad equate surveillance outside this region. However, the same phe nomenon is observed in other countnes and is compatible with the most commonly accepted hypothesis of a communicable disease which occurs in foci. Cases of AIDS in African patients have been descnbed in other European countnes (Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, United Kingdom). No cases in non-homosexual drug addicts have so far been reported in France. The AIDS patients belonging to this group have almost without exception been reported from the New York region.
