22 REGIONAL COMMITTEE: FORTY-SEVENTH SESSION VI. RESOLUTIONS AND DECISIONS ADOPTED BY THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE WPRJRC47.R I PROGRAMME BUDGET FOR 1998-1999 The Regional Committee, Having examined the proposed programme budget for the biennium 1998-1999 to be 1 financed from the regular budget and other sources of funds; Noting that the biennial programme budgeting is aligned to the strategies and priorities agreed to by the Regional Committee and the global priorities determined by the Executive Board; REQUESTS the Regional Director to transmit the programme budget proposals to the Director-General, for consideration and inclusion in his proposed programme budget for the financial period 1998-1999. Fifth Meeting, II September 1996 WPRlRC47/SRl5 WPRlRC47.R2 WHO WESTERN PACIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH CENTRE (EHC) The Regional Committee, Recognizing the extensive contribution that the WHO Western Pacific Environmental Health Centre has made to the development and implementation of environmental health programmes in Member States of the Region; Recognizing also the significant role played by the Government of Malaysia in providing the physical location and facilities of the Centre, and contributing both personnel and financial resources to its operation; Noting the continuing importance of environmental health as a priority programme in the Western Pacific Region; Mindful, however, of the resource constraints faced by the Organization and of the need to enhance the cost-effectiveness of programme del ivery; I. AGREES to the closure of the Centre in Malaysia and the redeployment of selected resources as part of an overall reorganization of the environmental health programme in the Region; 2. EXPRESSES its deep appreciation to the Government of Malaysia for hosting the Centre and contributing to its successful operation; 3. REITERATES its commitment to a strc.ng environmental health programme as a vital feature of the Organization's efforts to renew the health-for-all strategy, and of the Region's New horizons ill health initiative; I Document WPRlRC4714. j REPORT OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE 23 4. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (I) to ensure the continued viability of a strong environmental health programme in the Region; and (2) to maximize the use of technical resources available in the Region, such as the Environmental Health Research Centre to be established in Malaysia, and the WHO collaborating centres in environmental health. Fifth Meeting, II September 1996 WPRlRC47/SRJ5 WPRJRC47.R3 REPORT OF THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR The Regional Committee, Recalling resolution WPRJRC27.R8, which authorized the Regional Director to issue a short report to the Regional Committee on the work of WHO in the Region for the preceding year from I July to 30 June in even-numbered years, and a comprehensive report on the work of WHO during the previous two years from I July to 30 June in odd-numbered years; Recognizing the wishes of the Member States at the forty-sixth session of the Committee for a focused report on priority areas of activity and their results, on an annual basis; Noting with appreciation the report of the Regional Director entitled The Work of WHO in the Western Pacific Region 1 JlIiv 1995 - 30 JlIlIe 1996; I. APPROVES the format and contents of the sample report prepared in 1996 as a model for future reporting; 2. AGREES that the report should include an in-depth review of a certain issue each year as a I separate section of the document; 3. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (I) beginning in 1997, to discontinue the reporting practice authorized 111 resolution WPRlRC27.R8; (2) to prepare an annual health situation report including analysis of health statistics, covering the period from I July of the preceding year to 30 June of the present year, focusing on the priority areas of activity by WHO in collaboration with Member States, analysing the outcomes of such activity (including reasons for successes and failures), and making an 1 in-depth review of a selected issue of relevance to the health development of the Member States; and (3) to propose to the Regional Committee a topic for review in the following session.
