RABIES SURVEILLANCE Serological Testing Following Rabies Prophylaxis C anada. — When human diploid cell rabies vaccine (HDCV) was licensed m 1980, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NAC1) recommended that persons given pre-exposure or post-expo sure courses of HDCV should have a serological test two to three weeks after the last dose. Data collected in Canada and the United States now reveal that virtually all vaccinées develop protective levels of antibody . Accordingly, NACI advises that serological tests are no longer required after pre-exposure or post-exposure courses of HDCV when these have been given as recommended.

Similarly, serological testing is not required when a booster dose of HDCV is given to a person who has received primary HDCV vacci nation or who has previously shown an adequate serological response to another rabies vaccine. Serological tests are still recommended following primary courses of any rabies vaccine other than HDCV and in any person whose immune response may be impaired by disease or therapy.
