MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE Situation from 1983 to 1989 P a n a m a . — In this country meningococcal disease has been endemic until 1985, with a rate of less than 1 case per 100 000 population. However, since 1986 a substantial increase in inci­ dence has been observed: from 2.6 cases per 100 000 in 1986 to 3.12 in 1987 and 4.34 m 1988. The health region with the largest number of cases has been the Metropolitan Region, where inci­ dence rates have been more than double those for the country as a whole (Table 1).

MÉNINGITE À MÉNINGOCOQUES Situation de 1983 à 1989 P a n a m a . — La méningite à méningocoques a été endémique au Panama jusqu’en 1985, avec un taux inférieur à 1 cas pour 100 000 habitants. Depuis 1986, en revanche, on note une importante augmen­ tation de l’incidence qui est passée, pour 100 000 habitants, de 2,6 cas en 1986à3,12en 1987età4,34en 1988. C’est la Région métropolitaine qui a enregistré le plus grand nombre de cas, avec des taux d’mcidence plus de 2 fois supérieur à ceux de l’ensemble du pays (Tableau 1).

Children under 1 year of age have been the most affected age group, with rates almost 4 times the national average, followed by the 5-14 year age group (Table 2).

Le groupe d’âge le plus touché a été celui des moins d’un an, avec un taux d’mcidence plus de 4 fois supérieur à la moyenne nationale, suivi des 5-14 ans ('Tableau 2).

T he mortality and case-fatality rates have remained stable over the past 7 years. As regards seasonal variations, over the past 3 years the epi­ demic peaks have occurred in the first and fourth quarters, cor­ responding to the dry season and the end of the rainy season

(Table 3).

Les taux de mortalité et de létalité sont demeurés stables durant les 7 dernières années. En ce qui concerne les variations saisonières au cours des 3 dernières années, les pics épidémiques se sont produits aux premier et quatrième trimestres, ce qui correspond respectivement à la saison sèche et â la fin de la saison des pluies (Tableau 3).

It ts noteworthy.that isolations of Netssena meningitidis type B began m 1986 and since then have increased annually. In 1988 isolations of this strain accounted for 70.6% of the total, and in 1989 it was the only one reported.

Il faut noter que les isolements de Neisseria meningitidis type B ont commencé en 1986 et qu’ensutte leur nombre a augmenté chaque année. En 1988, cette souche représentait 70,6% du total et en 1989, elle était la seule notifiée.
