LE POINT SUR LES ÉPIDÉMIES
Yellow fever, Liberia As at 9 March 2004, a total of 39 suspected cases, including 8 deaths, were reported to WHO from 8 counties. New cases were re ported from Margibi, Grand Bassa, and Grand Gedeh counties.1 Four of the cases were laboratory confirmed by Institut Pasteur, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Further test ing on samples obtained from suspect cases is ongoing. As at 9 March 2004,66% of the target popula tion (47 763) have been immunized. Addi tional emergency mass immunization cam paigns are planned to start in Nimba county on March 20. WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières (Belgium, France, Netherlands and Switzer land), the International Committee of the Red Cross and other NGOs in the field are supporting the Ministry of Health in the implementation of the campaigns. De nou veaux cas ont été signalés concernant les comtés de Margibi, Grand Bassa et Grand Gedeh.1Quatre des cas ont été confirmés au laboratoire par l’Institut Pasteur à Abidjan (Côte d’ivoire). D’autres échantillons provenant de cas suspects sont en cours d’examen.
Au 9 mars 2004, 66% de la population cible (47 763) avait été vaccinée. Des campagnes de vaccination de masse supplémentaires doivent être entreprises d’urgence dans le comté de Nimba à partir du 20 mars. L’OMS, l’UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières (Belgique, France, Pays-Bas et Suisse), le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge et d’autres ONG présentes sur le terrain aident le Ministère de la Santé dans ces campagnes.
Weekly meetings are being held with the Ministry of Health, Nimba County Health Team, UNICEF and Médecins Sans Frontières (Netherlands, Switzerland) to coordinate and plan the response. ■
