INFLUENZA — 1 Haemagglutination-inhibition tests carried out at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, Atlanta, have shown that three strains of influenza virus A, isolated from patients who fell ill in September and October 1977, resembled A/Victoria/3/75. This is the first time that strains from Jamaica resembling A/Victoria/3/75 have been identified in Atlanta, as all Jamaican strains sent to Atlanta during the winter 1975-1976 have been similar to A/England/864/75 and A/Texas/1/77, and no isolates were sent to Atlanta during the winter 1976-1977. Chile. — One strain from Chile reacted mostly with antiserum A/Texas/1/77.1 Canal Zone o f Panama. — Four strains from the Canal Zone reacted mostly with antiserum A/Texas/1/77 (isolation of strains started during the last week of May, reached a maximum frequency in June and ended in mid-July). Keeping in mind the results already published in the WER on the characterizations carried out in Atlanta for strains isolated in other countries in 1977, it may be said that strains reacting mostly with antiserum A/Texas/1/77 have been isolated in most regions of the world, and in particular in the following countries: Australia; Marshall Islands (Majuro Atoll); Thailand, the Philippines, Sin gapore, China (Taiwan Province), and Japan; Argentina and Chile; Canal Zone of Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and Puerto Rico; Canada and the United States of America (including one recent isolate, obtained from Oregon in September). No other variant was isolated among the strains sent to Atlanta from Marshall Islands, Japan, Chile, Canal Zone of Panama and Trinidad and Tobago, whereas elsewhere evidence of infection with virus A/ Victoria/3/75 was also obtained. 1 This strain was related but not similar to A/Victoria/3/75 as was indicated by error in No. 38. p. 305.
Chill. — Une souche qui provenait du Chili réagissait surtout avec l’antisérum A/Texas/1/77.1 Zone du Canal de Panama. — Quatre souches qui provenaient de la Zone du Canal de Panama réagissaient surtout avec Tantisérum A/Texas/1/77 (les isolements de souches commencèrent pendant la dernière semaine de mai, atteignirent une fréquence maximale en juin et cessèrent à rai-juillet). Compte tenu des résultats déjà publiés dans le REH au sujet des caractérisations effectuées à Atlanta pour les souches isolées dans d’autres pays en 1977, on peut dire que des souches réagissant sur tout avec Pantisérum A/Texas/1/77 ont été isolées dans la plupart des régions du monde, et en particulier dans les pays suivants: Australie; Iles Marshall (Atoll Majuro); Thaïlande, les Philippines, Singapour, Chine (Province de Taïwan) et Japon; Argentine et Chili; Zone du Canal de Panama, Trinité-et-Tobago et Porto Rico; Canada et Etats-Unis (dont un isolat récent, obtenu en Orégon en septembre). Aucun autre variant ne fut identifié parmi les souches envoyées à Atlanta en provenance des Des Marshall, du Japon, du Chili, de la Zone du Canal de Panama et de Trinité-et-Tobago, dors que dans les autres pays, l’infection à virus A/Victoria/3/75 fut également mise en évidence. 1 Cette souche était apparentée mais non similaire à A/Victona/3/75, comme il a été indiqué par erreur dans le N° 38, p. 305.
