ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) Update: October 19851 U nited K ingdom . - Since September 1985,16 cases fulfilling the criteria for case definition have been reported. These are: 15 homosexual men, 3 of whom died with Kaposi’s sarcoma and opportunistic infections; 7, of whom 3 died, with Pneumocystis carimi pneumonia ; 2 with Kaposi’s sarcoma and P. carinu pneumonia; 3, of whom 1 died, with other opportunistic infections; and 1 male immigrant from the United States of America with P carinii pneumonia, who was an IV drug user. During the month 6 patients previously reported have died.

Il s’agissait de: 15 homosexuels de sexe masculin, dont 3 sont morts du sarcome de Kaposi et d’infections opportunistes; 7 sujets, dont 3 sont décédés, atteints de pneumonie à Pneumocystis carinii ; 2 sujets atteints à la fois du sarcome de Kaposi et de pneumonie à P. carinii ; 3 sujets atteints d’autres infections opportunistes, dont 1 est mort ; et d’un immigrant des Etats-Unis d’Amérique, atteint de pneumonie à P. carinu, qui étau un toxicomane utilisant des drogues injectables. Au cours du mois, 6 malades dont le cas avait déjà été notifié sont morts. L’adoption de la définition révisée a conduit à inclure 2 cas d ’homo sexuels de sexe masculin porteurs d’un lymphome non hodgkinien et l’exclusion de 2 cas masculins qui étaient séro-négatifs pour les anticorps anti-LAV/HTLV-III. Adoption of the amended case definition has led to the inclusion of 2 cases in homosexual men with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the exclusion of 2 cases in men who were LAV/HTLV-III anti body negative.
