STATEMENT BY DR MOHD ISMAIL NOOR REPRESENTATIVE OF THE INTERNATIONAL UNION OF NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES
I wish to express

appreciation to the WHO Regional Office for the invitation extended to
the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS) to attend this meeting. The IUNS is an umbrella body, whose members comprise of scientific societies related to Nutrition. The IUNS acknowledges the leading role played by agencies of the United Nation system, in particular FAO dan WHO in assisting member countries in Western Pacific Region to prepare the National Plan of Action in line with the leN World Declaration on Nutrition adopted in Rome in 1992. Given the diversity of problems that the developing countries in the Western Pacific Region are facing and the widely different priorities in their need for assistance, the inclusion of nutrition objectives into development policies and programme is seen as a major break-through in most countries, where nutrition issues are often not very high priority on the agenda of policy makers. The priorities and strategies identified by leN to be incorporated in the national plan of action for Nutrition, to a certain extent, encompasses the "Health For All" strategy proposed by WHO, hence its role must be made more visible as stated in item 50, page 39 of the leN, World Declaration and Plan of Action for Nutrition.
