Monitoring Noncommunicable Diseases & Their Risk Factors Step towards WHO STEPS Survey: a healthier world Adults Adolescents Conceptualized and developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), STEPS Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factor Survey is a household survey tool for collecting, analyzing and disseminating data on risk factors of Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and associated health system response at the population level. Population-Based Household STEPS Surveys Global School- based Student Health Surveys (GSHS) Learn more with: By providing a standardized framework, periodic STEPS surveys assist countries to establish their own risk factor surveillance system to monitor and control NCDs. Monitoring NCD Risk Factors and Systems Response at Population Level the STEPS Surveys have been providing comparable core data to countries across the world on key risk factors that determine majority of disease burden; especially for the four major NCDs: Cardiovascular Diseases Diabetes Cancer Respiratory Diseases across the world have used STEPS Surveys to monitor trends in NCD risk factors and the health system response to control them, making them one of the most widely used population-surveys in the world. Many countries have conducted multiple rounds of STEPS surveys enabling them to assess the trends over time. Dietary Behaviors & Salt Intake STEPS takes a comprehensive approach to measure all the established core risk factors responsible for the majority of disease burden from NCDs at the population level rather than a single risk factor approach. This combined approach saves time and efforts, and allows analysis of clustering and inter- relationships among the different risk factors. STEPS distinctiveness lies in its comprehensive approach towards monitoring NCDs. Offering a standardized yet flexible framework which can be adapted to country context, taking into account local and regional specificities. Allowing for differential level of risk factor assessment as per the needs of the country and resources available, without compromising the comparability of data. Comprehensively assessing the risk factors through questionnaire assessment, physical measurements, and biochemical measurements. Rigorous Methodology Rigorous and validated methodology developed over almost two decades to yield reliable, accurate, and representative data. Features of STEP Survey Staying Updated Regular review and updating of survey questionnaires to accommodate new and emerging evidence on risk factors. Guidance Technical Assistance and Support Capacity Building Support Latest Technology User-friendly survey manuals and modules on different topics to help countries plan and implement the survey. Continuous technical support to countries at all stages of survey implementation: planning, protocol development, field implementation, and analysis and dissemination of data. Ongoing support to countries to build their own technical and institutional capacity through state-of-the-art training workshops for planning, field implementation, data management and analysis and reporting. Use of android tablets and eSTEPS software to collect the field data for improved data quality and faster data processing. STEPS NCD risk factors surveys are an integral part of an effective, dynamic and quality NCD risk factor surveillance system, aimed at enhancing the capacities of countries to monitor and control NCDs in a comprehensive manner.
