MALARIA U n it e d K in g d o m . — The number of overt cases of malaria reported during 1973 by the Public Health Laboratory Service and other sources in the United Kingdom was 541. In comparison with the two previous years for which reliable data are available (251 cases in 1971 ; 1 336 cases in 1972),3 the increase in the incidence of malaria has been considerable, though some of this can be ascribed to an improved system of reporting. With the exception of one relapse of a previous infection and one case of congenital malaria (both due to Plasmodium vivax), all cases o f malaria were imported from abroad. The circumstances of acquired infection in 441 persons from whom the relevant information was obtained indicate that again the highest proportion of cases (54%) was in short-term visitors to malarious countries. Among these, tourists represent numerically the most important group. This indicates that proper malaria prophylaxis is frequently ignored by visitors to malarious areas. The second most frequent occurrence of imported malaria (23 %) is seen in immigrants from overseas. 1 See No. 47, 1972, pp. 462463. * See No. 9. pp. 73-74.

PALUDISME R oyaume -U n i .

In both groups P. vivax is more common than P. falciparum (64 % and 22% respectively). On the other hand, in long-term residents abroad P. falciparum is almost as common (38%) as P. m a x (44%). This group comprises mainly missionaries, teachers and voluntary workers overseas, most of whom work in Africa.
