INFLUENZA A ustralia (information dated 7 July). — Since the end of May sporadic influenza cases associated with virus B have occurred in various localities in the State o f Western Australia. The infection was identified by virus isolation or serology.

GRIPPE

Australie (information en date du 7 juillet). — Depuis fin mai, des cas sporadiques de grippe associés au virus B se sont produits dans diverses localités de l’E tat d’Australie occidentale. L’infection a été identifiée par l’isolement du virus ou par les examens sérolo­ giques. Malaisie (information en date du 7 juillet). — A la suite de l’apparition de la poussée qui fut signalée à l’Université de Malai­ sie,1 une épidémie grippale d ’importance moyenne fut observée à partir de la première semaine de juin dans la population de Kuala Lumpur. Le sommet se produisit pendant la deuxième semaine de juin. L ’affection fut généralement bénigQe et l’on ne signala pas de décès. Elle atteignit surtout les jeunes adultes ainsi que quelques enfants d’âge pré-scolaire, mais elle n ’affecta habituellement pas les écoliers. On isola dans environ 60% des prélèvements des souches de virus A proches au point de vue antigénique de A/England/42/72.1 A fr ique d u S u d (information en date du I er juillet). — *•4 A par­ tir de la mi-juin, des cas sporadiques de grippe ont été signalés dans la région de Johannesburg chez des enfants du groupe d’âge 0 à 4 ans hospitalisés pour broncho-pneumonie. D ’autre part, une épidémie de grippe s’est produite de début à fin juin chez des mineurs travaillant dans une mine de charbon à W itbank, dans le nord-est du Transvaal. Enfin, une épidémie locale de grippe atteignant tous les groupes d ’âge s’est produite pendant la deuxième quinzaine de juin à Bryanston, au nord de Johannesburg, où un médecin généraliste signala 10 à 15 cas par jour. M alaysia (information dated 7 July). — Following the appear­ ance of the outbreak in the University of Malaya,1*a moderate influenza epidemic was observed from the first week of June in the general population of Kuala Lumpur. The peak occurred during the second week o f June. The disease was generally mild and no deaths were reported. It attacked mostly young adults and a few preschool children, but school children were usually not affected.

Strains of virus A antigenically dose to A/England/42/721 were isolated from about 60% of specimens. So u th A fr ic a (information dated 1 July).—a* 4From mid-June, spo­ * radic influenza cases have been reported in the region o f Johannesburg in children of the age-group 0-4 years hospitalized for pneu­ monia. An influenza epidemic occurred between the beginning and the end of June among coal miners in Witbank, in the NorthEast of Transvaal. A local influenza epidemic affecting all agegroups occurred during the second part of June in Bryanston, in the North o f Johannesburg, where 10-15 cases were reported daily from a general practice.
