on 25 June following a febrile illness which occurred in Nigeria. He was infected in May in a village near Jos, Central Nigeria. On 12 July, he was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital, London, for investigation, and in view of the possibility of Lassa fever was trans ferred to Coppetts Wood Hospital where a complement-fixation test for Lassa fever was found negative. As he was clinically well, he was discharged to his home in Sheffield on 19 July. The isolation of Lassa fever virus, o ra closely related virus, from urine received on 16 July was reported after the patient was dis charged, and he was readmitted on 27 July to Coppetts Wood Hospital. A press notice was issued on 27 July to warn the persons who visited the George Bird ward at St Mary’s Hospital during the period 12-16 July. All known contacts have been placed under surveillance. Two of them returned to Australia and Switzerland and their respective health administrations have been duly informed.
