INFLUENZA SURVEILLANCE Chile (13 April 1983). — A serological survey is earned out m one area of Santiago in March-April each year before the influenza season begins. The survey gives an estimate of the prevalence of influenza antibodies m different age groups and indicates whether current influenza strains may still be able to cause disease in the commg season. Companson with the results o f the previous year’s survey shows the impact of the past influenza season. In March-April 1983, 485 sera were tested. About 62% had haemaggluunation-inhibiting (HI) antibody titres è* 10 to an influenza A/Belgium/2/82(H3N2)-hke strain, 45% to an A/Brazil/11/78 (HlNl)-hke strain and 37% to an influenza B/Smgapore/222/79-like strain. The seropositivity rate for the H3N2 virus remained largely unchanged compared with the results obtained in the corresponding period of 1982 and varied from 45% in the age group 15-19 years to 88% m the age group 6-9 years. For the H 1N 1 virus the rate of seropositivity varied from 60% m the age group 10-14 years to 33% in the youngest age group (2-5 years). There was a small overall decrease compared with the results from 1982. The decrease was most marked m the age group 6-9 years (74% in 1982 to 44% in 1983) and 40-59 years (72% to 39%).

SURVEILLANCE DE LA GRIPPE Chili (13 avril 1983).

The rate of antibody to influenza B virus increased from 25% o f the sera tested in 1982 to 37% in 1983. The increase was shared by almost all age groups and indicates that influenza B may have circulated among the population during the last season although no virus could be isolated in the laboratory.1 1 See No. 44, 1982, pp 342
