The Dutch Ministry o f Public Health and Environment already distributes free of charge two brochures—one for the medical profession and the other for the general public—giving advice on health including the risk of contracting an exotic disease, particularly malaria, when travelling abroad. The resurgence o f the incidence of malaria in some areas of the world, the increase of world traffic and the allied problem of the increase of the number of cases of imported malaria, together with the disquieting problem o f the growing resistance of Plasmodium strains to antimalarial drugs, have led to the inclusion of a para graph on the protection against malaria in the booklet of inter national certificates of vaccination. Provision has been made for information concerning the specific antimalaria drug prescribed. The opportunity has also been taken to include some general health information o f value to travellers. A copy of the latest revision of this booklet of International Certificates of Vaccination has been distributed together with a circular letter to all general practitioners, paediatricians, internists and public health officers.1 *National health administrations may be able to obtain a sample copy of this booklet from the Head, Division of Infectious Diseases, Staatstoezicht op de Volksgeondheid, Dokter Reijersstraat 8, Leidschendam, Netherlands.

S p a in . — Two fatal cases of malaria were reported in 1977. These deaths occurred among nationals visiting tropical countries of Africa without taking the necessary precautions.

E spagne .

• In July 1977 a woman, aged 42, was admitted to the hospital in Huelva, with high fever, shivering and splenomegaly. The patient died in hospital. The blood examination revealed the presence of P. falciparum. The malaria was contracted in Kenya where the patient stayed for two weeks without taking any preventive measures against malaria.1 • In August 1977, a 37-year-old electrician on board a ship sailing from Pointe-Noire (Congo) was landed seriously ill at Puerto Vigo. Symptoms of the disease (fever, shivering, sweating, etc.) had started ten days earlier. In spite of anti-malaria treatment the patient died in hospital. The parasitological blood examination showed the presence of P. falciparum.

E d it o r ia l N o t e : These reports demonstrate the importance for travel agents and the medical profession to inform international travellers about the malaria risk areas, and for medical practitioners to obtain a complete history from their patients. In the Weekly Epidemiological Record No. 24, 1976, an extensive report, Informa tion on Malaria Risk for International Travellers * was published which gave detailed information on areas where there is a risk of contracting malaria. 1 T ie Kenyan National Health Administration has advised all airlines and tour operators o f the risk of contracting malaria, particularly in the coastal and western parts of Kenya and of the need for prophylactic measures. • Can be obtained from WHO, Distribution and Sales, CH-1211 Geneva 27.
