VIRAL HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER S udan . — 1 On 12 September 1979, the Ministry of Health reported an outbreak of haemorrhagic fever in the southern part of the country. Retrospectively, it appeared that the outbreak pro bably started in August. The area coincided with the one where there was an Ebola virus fever outbreak in 1976, i.e. the triangle Nzara-Yambia-Li Rangu. A WHO-Sudanese emergency team was immediately constituted and comprised virologists, epidemio logists and operations officers for epidemiological and etiological investigations and for containment operations. The build-up in the num ber of cases was very slow and the outbreak remained restricted to the same area. Altogether, 64 cases, of which 27 were fatal, have occurred. The last case was reported on 1 October. No virus has been isolated. However, serological diagnosis using immuno fluorescence techniques, both locally and at the WHO Collaborating C entre for Virus Reference and Research, Center for Disease C ontrol, Atlanta, USA, showed nine cases positive for Ebola virus infection. 1 See N o. 3, 1977, p. 36.

FIÈVRE HÉMORRAGIQUE VIRALE S o u d a n . 1 Voir N° 3, 1977, p. 36.
